Chasen vs. Matcha Shaker: Which One Is Right for You?

Jun 17, 2026 FUKUOKA_OTAKU
Fugetsu resin matcha chasen and colorful Japanese matcha shakers side by side.

Both make great matcha. But they suit very different lifestyles.

The chasen — a whisk used in Japanese tea ceremony for over 500 years
— and the matcha shaker — its modern, portable counterpart — each have
their place. Here's how to choose.

The Chasen

Best for: Tea ceremony lovers, slow mornings, purists

A chasen produces beautifully frothy matcha with a rich, layered
flavour. Traditional chasen are hand-carved from bamboo — but modern
resin chasen are also available, and come with real advantages:
they're dishwasher-safe, resistant to mould, and built to last.

The one we carry at FUKUOKA OTAKU is made by Fugetsu, a trusted
Japanese manufacturer. It disassembles completely for easy cleaning
— something bamboo chasen can never do.

What to keep in mind:
・Requires a tea bowl
・Takes a little practice to get the wrist motion right
・Not practical for travel or the office

The Matcha Shaker

Best for: Busy mornings, travel, matcha lattes, beginners

Add matcha powder, pour in a small amount of warm water, shake for
20–30 seconds. The wing-shaped structure inside prevents clumping
and produces a smooth concentrate — ready to drink as-is or poured
over milk and ice.

・What to keep in mind
・No technique needed
・Easy to clean, travel-friendly
・Works for both hot and cold drinks

  on your desk

Which One Should You Choose?

If you love the ritual → chasen.
If you want great matcha every day without the fuss → shaker.

Many matcha lovers own both: the chasen for weekend mornings,
the shaker for everything else.

8 Colors, One for Every Style

The FUKUOKA OTAKU matcha shaker comes in 8 colors, each inspired
by traditional Japanese color names: Jet Black, Antique Vermilion,
Pink, Cherry Blossom Pink, Yamabuki Yellow, Fresh Leaf Green,
Indigo White, and Deep Forest Green.

Shop the matcha shaker — and the Fugetsu resin chasen — at
FUKUOKA OTAKU. Ships internationally from Fukuoka, Japan.
